What makes these holograms 'art'? The fact that they've been exhibited in numerous art exhibitions in recognized museums, galleries,
the fact that they have inspired others or been imitated by newer generation holographic artists who have exhibited also,
or because they've been created personally by a recognized holographic artist and pioneer in display and art of holography?
That should answer the question. Visit these and other pages to see why.

For Sale or Lease - Holographic Art by Al Razutis

Brief Resume of Holographic Art by Razutis

Original and unique works that predate its imitators by decades. If you want to see the history of holographic art as it was created in the 1970's and continues today this is where important works reside. Knowledgeable collectors know the difference.

Interferometric Transmission Holograms - individual works or in installation

"To create holograms 'without object' is to create a hologram of 'time', more precisely and in this case a 'disturbance in time'.   In these works a stainless steel plate is used as a 'plane' to reflect the light ('the object beam') and to act as a 'medium' for these disturbances which were accomplished by means of hand-applied 'stress'.   I'm playing a kind of 'music' here as visualized in the interference contours, a music of the cosmos not just music for our ears."   (A.R.)

INSTALLATION NOTE:

This work is to be installed on a plinth in a glass cube where the glass plate acts as beamsplitter in the creation in the otherwise bare and dark exhibition room of this living interactive ambience of insterference contours as per the classic design of a Michelson Interferometer.

ARTIST'S CURATING STATEMENT - INSTALLATION VERSION:

Excerpted from WAVEFRONT Issue Fall 1986
AN AVANT-GARDE FOR HOLOGRAPHY BY WAY OF NEMESIS - by AL RAZUTIS

"Allegory of the Missing Object

Imagine walking into a darkened gallery space and perceiving only an optical configuration featuring a laser, beam splitter, lenses and the combined beams of a Michelson interferometer. The "object" in this case is the room ambience containing you, who "creates" the changes in the projected fringe pattern. A site-specific installation which could contain a hologram if it were deemed necessary to insert a photographic plate in the path of the combined beams.

Now further imagine being confronted by an image, or a condition alluding to an image, that speaks to you conceptually about the absence of the hologram but requires you to conceptually recreate this absent object. The stories this art would have you tell would reflect on your own conception and anticipation of holographic art and in a manner where reconceptualization is pre-eminent over art appreciation.
"

"All things in our universe are constantly in motion, vibrating. Even objects that appear to be stationary are in fact vibrating, oscillating, resonating, at various frequencies. Resonance is a type of motion, characterized by oscillation between two states. And ultimately all matter is just vibrations of various underlying fields."

-- 'A New Theory of Consciousness', Tam Hunt, Scientific American, 2018

"Rather than creating a hologram of an object I created a interferogram of a 'stressed' plane, like the 'musical instrument' I was playing by hand in the before and after. I could have named these something 'mystical', but I preferred to name them as is."   (A.R.)

Contour 1975 - by Al Razutis - laser interferometric hologram, 180 degree cylinder installation

Precedent - by Al Razutis 1970's:
INCLINE / STRESSED / PLANE - 1975 - Laser transmission interferometric hologram
180 degree cylinder view on film - 12" x 27"

"The following holograms explore light and materiality, after all a hologram 'materializes' light into shapes when replayed. It then depends on the light illuminating it which can be altered at will. Light comes in wavelengths (colours), in wavefront shapes (spatial coherence) and when the illuminating spectrum is altered so are its holographic 'image shapes'. It then assumes the plasticity of 'dreamtime'."   (A.R.)

PLEASE NOTE: 'Escher Falling' requires refurbishing for public exhibition.
The master hologram is on film and in excellent condition - laminated mounting glass requires replacement.

"This piece re-presents the paradoxical perspectives of M.C. Escher's Another World graphic, as decomposed into separate angled planes and recorded as master transmission hologram using pulsed green laser. The holographic image 'sets' the planes (and its perspective) in space, and the perspective translations of the Escher drawing are 're-imagined' within the holographic frame exposure, and combined with the laminated and superimposed graphic (the drawing itself on film).

CONCEPTS: This work deals with the suggestion of 'gravity' and 'falling' through space, with a nod to Sir Isaac Newton and his theories of gravity, light, based on Euclidean space. The arrangement of the planes and their angles is organized around my personal choices; this piece is about the interplay of the holographic (perspective) and the implied and paradoxical (in 2D) perspectives of Escher, subject to gravity, subject to space."

"These remarkable (and quite spectacular) pulsed-laser life size transmission hologram masters by Al Razutis represent a series of 'frames' in a motion-picture proof of concept project, showing these Buddhist 'sky creatures' (or angels) flying as images focused in space. This motion picture concept featured true holographic motion-pictures projected in space not imitations and fakes as are seen widely. These are deep scene holograms greater than 3 m. depth.

They were created by Al Razutis as his expression of Buddhist 'Apsaras' for consideration in the use of theater in China on the tales of the 'Silk Road' which was to be artistic directed by Prof. Z. Wang and backed by the provincial government of Lanzhou, China. Commissioned by Prof. Wang, created by Al Razutis with the directed participation and assistance of Mei-man Lee (actor), Rob Taylor (holography lab director), Allen Miller (holography lab owner), Anne Popperwell (costumes, preparations, and gallery installation) these are a host of masters that can be grouped together and exhibited in a dark gallery space 'with the wind'." Its antique and legacy value is important in the history of holography as is its preservation,
and therefore it is priced (as the historical works below are priced) accordingly.

Holographic Art - Reflection Holograms & Assemblages

Historical works from 1970's - 1980's by Al Razutis

"A hologram is a recording of two wavefronts of coherent light interfering in space. The resultant holographic image 'materializes' light to recreate the original scene, or pull it inside out, as necessary. These works combine this phenomenon of holographic 'materializing' of objects in scenes with sculptural or mixed media forms that begin a dialog across time, across the arts, across notions of 'reality'. "   (A.R.)

Al Razutis and his work Newtonian Galactic Assembly Line, Surrogate Dressed for Art New Vogue, Spice Cabinet 1 on exhibition at Deja Vu Exhibition, Vancouver, BC Canada 2010

"This 'galactic assembly line' is like a 'sea anemone' with alternating real and pseudoscopic images of a set of 'gears' trying to match each other (virtual and real image) in a shallow space -- a 'tide pool' in spacetime, which is where we are while observing this.
"It was originally conceived as a 'floor piece' for viewers to 'walk on', a piece of indeterminate size, but finalized for installation (only as a wall piece) when the production process got 'bogged down'... This work and the idea of 'hologram as floor piece' has been imitated by various 'artists' during various decades following the 70's.
"Originally designed (but not exhibited as impractical at that time) for a 'moving light' unit, or several units 'dissolving with each other' to give this bed of gears, this 'sea anemone', this 'galactic assembly line' (with a nod to Newton and his ideas of space and light) some life, and the requisite movement (for life).
